Results Database
of
The British Barcelona Club Race's.

Introduction:
This database consists of a fully searchable repository of race results, commencing with the old bird races of 2010, but also acts as a directory of both pigeons and fanciers competing in the British Barcelona Club. Data will be added progressively  and whilst care is taken over its accuracy some errors are bound to occur. If you notice any errors or have suggestions about further presentation please contact via this Email link.

The Database presents several Views of a similar format to that below. The bulk of the screen is taken up with the Data View, in this case Races a detailed list of the races contained in the database. Several Search options and choices can be made within that area and these will be described later in this introduction. To the left of the screen is a list of the available Pages or Views with the current Page shown in bold. Below that is a list of the Print and Export options all of which are available by a Click.

Page/View List                              Search Bar                                         Data View.
Data View.

The Data View consists of several Columns or Fields of Data under specific Headings. The whole view can be re-ordered in accordance with an individual column by Clicking on the two small arrowheads to the side of the Column Heading. For instance if you wanted to re-order the Races shown here in the order of number of birds sent  then you should Click on the arrow heads by "Birds". This would then show the races in the order of number of birds sent and, if it showed them initially in the order of smallest to largest and you wanted them in the reverse order, then by Clicking on the arrowheads again it would re-order them in that way.

Within the Columns of data when an item is underlined, as here in the columns Weather-Report Map-Result, by Clicking on an individual item you will be taken to a new screen, and even in some instances to a different web site, displaying fresh information. In the instances above these are Weather report and details for that race, Report of the race and winners, Map displaying generally the first 50 positions and the full race Result in a database view.  In other database views you will see Ring Numbers, Name/Flyer and Town underlined in this way and by Clicking on an item you will be taken to a new view displaying all the race results in this database for that Ring Number or that Name/Flyer or to the Town displayed on a map.

Search Bar

Within each view it is possible to make both simple and detailed searches. Within the Search Bar you are provided with options to search within a particular Column or Field against several options like "contains" "equals" "starts with" and a blank box in which to type what it is you wish to search for, then Click Apply. The Search facility is both simple and extensive but nevertheless some practice may assist.
To the right of the view heading, in this case Races, you will see "Advanced search" by Clicking on this you will be provided with further search options which you may find helpful.

Page List

By Clicking on an item under the Page List you will be taken to data which has been sorted into a new View and below you will find a brief description of each Page.

Races:  As has been stated this page provides a list of the races, brief details of each and links to more detailed aspects.

Section:  This page itemises members and birds for each race by Sections and provides a Map and details of sections from a Click/Link beneath the data view title.

Loft:  This page itemises all the lofts by Name/Flyer contained within the database with their Section and Member number and also provides a link to their results and Town.

Topbirds:  This page will display details, photographs and links to all Topbirds as information becomes available. There is no set criteria for a Topbird it could just be your favourite or it could be one of the many Club Champion's. Initially efforts will be made to establish on this page all the Club Champions but this will take a little time. If you have details, photographs, pedigrees etc of any pigeon you think should or could be on this page then please submit via this Email link.

Toplofts:  This page is similar in all respect to Topbirds except that it deals with Lofts and Flyers rather than pigeons. Again it will take some time to build but gradually it should become a detailed reference and guide to, well why not all members of the British Barcelona Club. Again if you have any details, photos etc please submit them via this Email link. (No personal details, address-telephone, will be included on this page unless you, the person concerned, request them.)

Race Results:  While individual Race Results can be accessed from the Races page this page is really the bulk of the database in that it consists of all the Race Results. From this page you can therefore search within any result you wish.

Points Section A - H:  Throughout the Results you will see a column awarding Points. This is a relatively new concept in this country but one that might hopefully catch on. There are many ways of using points and you may be aware or heard of various systems including various ways of using a co-efficient. Each system has, or claims, advantages but equally they also have deficiencies. There is no perfect system. This whole area is open to discussion, debate, development and experiment and the system here is but part of that development and experiment so let’s experiment and develop.

The system here is simple. In each race the first 25% of each Section's entrants are awarded points if timed. You will see that in some races the full 25% are timed while in others they are not.  Generally, on the continent, a race result is governed by that 25% and thus closes when that figure is reached. This provides a quantitative value to a race result. The first target of a competitor therefore is to get into the result and to get as many entrants as possible into that result thus providing a quantitative measure of success. In each Section the First pigeon is awarded 100 points and the remainder of the 25% are awarded points on a sliding scale   according to the Section entry.

In these pages you will see the total points awarded to each individual pigeon and thus you can see, at a glance, not simply the ACE pigeons in each Section but the whole scale of achievement in each Section and from that compare Section by Section. What must be remembered here of course is that these points reflect only the performances in these races, however if a similar system was adopted across the sport it would be possible to provide this sort of comparative ranking across the sport and across the whole country.

Point’s v co-efficient. Both types of system provide ways of making a mathematical comparison of performance. Very often, when using co-efficient, a value is included for distance flown which has a superficial appeal. However if you really examine race results and the influence of various weather and geographical factors you will see that while distance is always a factor it is often not the most important or influential factor. Wind is often the deciding influence in a race and as things stand there is no mathematical factor that can be included to account for it. Therefore the primary determining influence, in many races, is locality and thus the importance of Sections comes into its own with proper size and structure to take some account at least of both distance and those other factors. Consequently the fairest way to judge races, at this time, is on a section basis and thus Points awarded on a Section basis becomes the most attractive, though not perfect, system to develop. Comments, suggestions and recommendations for further development would be welcomed via this Email link.

Full Race Maps: Another feature you will find is Full Race Maps. These are Maps made from the complete Race result. If you scroll down, beneath the actual Map, you will see the entire result in order and clicking on any individual entry will take you to its relevant place on the Map. A box will appear on the screen with full details of that performance. In the bottom right corner of the box, if the fancier has multiple timings in the race, numbers will indicate how many and by  clicking on the small arrowheads you can scroll through them.

At first view the Map shows the entire country and on those with large numbers of pigeons in the result you will find them grouped in localities. The overview will show these groups as pie charts with the colours representing the Velocity bands as shown in the key at the base of the map. Individual entries will be colour coded in accordance with this key. Therefore at a glance you can tell the numbers of pigeons timed within areas and the distribution of velocities within those areas.

You are therefore invited to explore the database, the results, the pigeons, the flyers and the performances and make of them what you will, perhaps the best place to start is the Races page HERE.

Since this database was first published the I.P.R.R. website has established a database of results across the major UK Clubs.  This means you can now search and discover performances of both birds and fanciers across all these races which will provide a more comprehensive view. You will find the IPRR database HERE.
