Vice President weds Committee Girl.
There are few things in these murky winter days, when the mist swirls around and the news grinds on about  our  vast financial crisis and the heavy  handed press,  that bring a little cheer, a  touch of colour, a glimpse of optimism to our lives. But this is The British Barcelona Club and we have just that. We have news and we have cheer and we have optimism and we have a Vice President who, after due consideration, has decided to marry his very own and our very special Committee girl. On Friday 11th November 2011 at 11.30 precisely at the Stafford Registry Office Anne Sandalowycz gave up that glorious name, which has caused all sorts of people enormous problems to pronounce, to become Mrs Richard Spooner.
This came to me as a bit of a surprise, a pleasant surprise, really quite a delightful surprise because, as I am sure anyone who knows them will agree, they have a very strong bond between them and one might have thought that any development on that would be unlikely. But they have proved that silly  theory wrong and in deciding to marry at this stage of their relationship have made it if anything even more special, even more significant and even more romantic. I am sure everyone would wish to join in wishing them every happiness and offer them our heartiest congratulations. Nothing better describes   these events than Richards own words:

“We were married at Stafford Registry office on Friday 11/11/11 at 11.30 an easy date for us to remember. Prior to the ceremony we stood with the crowds in the market square and listened to the R.A.F. band and observed the two minutes silence.

We have been together for 28 years, and in fact had been an "item" for 7 years before that. It doesn't do to rush these things! When I was 10 my parents gave me the Foyles book on Pigeon Racing, and I have never forgotten the chapter on stocking the loft, it reads:-

Next to taking a wife the most chanceable thing in the world is buying blood stock.

I even remember the chapter on breeding and the importance of hybrid vigour. Anne’s sire is Ukraine and her dam is English!!

Well it is often said that marriages are made in heaven, but in our case it was an instruction from our accountant. We kept quiet about it until after the Gala night in Bournemouth to prevent our President Nigel Rigiani from arranging any "nice" surprises for us and also as Anne does the flowers we wanted to enjoy listening to him struggle to pronounce her surname, for one last time.

A few years ago Anne had an accident (pigeon related) and damaged her left hand,  so she is unable to wear a ring. But just to show that romance is still very much alive after all these years I gave her a brand new scraper with matching bucket, gift wrapped of course!”

Lets all raise our glasses to the health and happiness  of
Mr and Mrs Anne and Richard Spooner.
